Steam Punk paiting - Clock Babe by Susan Puttock

Clock Babe

'Clock Babe' is a 4' x 4' analogue painting by me, Susan Puttock, which reimagines a small section of a fourteenth century mural painting " The Massacre of the Innocents" (first version) by the Italian artist Giotto. This section embodies an optical illusion of two young women with a baby. With its emphasis on time travel, steampunk impressed me as an exciting and appropriate framework for turning it into a contemporary image - a chance to put the shared ingredients of optics and steampunk together, especially ambiguities of time, space, place and narrative.

Anyone interested in seeing or buying prints of my various steampunk paintings which I am happy to sign including Clock Babe, can do so at the forthcoming Isle of Wight Steampunk Festival 2026 from 18th to 20th September. Even if looking at paintings is not your thing, come along anyway - the Festival's good fun and brimming with amazing creative energy and talent throughout.
